Best Books for JEE Main 2026 — Subject Wise
Complete book list for JEE Main Physics, Chemistry, and Maths. NCERT first, then reference books for theory and problem practice.
For JEE Main 2026, you need exactly 2–3 books per subject: NCERT as the foundation, one book for theory/concepts, and one book for problem practice. Do not buy 10 books — you will not finish them. This guide gives you the exact book list used by JEE toppers, in the order you should study them.
The Golden Rule: NCERT First
Before touching any reference book, complete NCERT textbooks (Class 11 + 12) for all three subjects. NCERT is the base from which JEE questions are framed. Students who skip NCERT and jump to H.C. Verma or Cengage often have conceptual gaps that cost marks.
Physics — Best Books
| Book | Author | Purpose | Difficulty | When to Use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NCERT Physics (11+12) | NCERT | Foundation + concepts | Basic–Moderate | First — read before anything else |
| Concepts of Physics Vol 1 & 2 | H.C. Verma | Conceptual depth + moderate problems | Moderate–Hard | After NCERT, chapter by chapter |
| Understanding Physics (5 books) | D.C. Pandey | Extensive problem practice | Moderate–Hard | After H.C. Verma for more practice |
| Problems in General Physics | I.E. Irodov | Advanced problems (JEE Advanced level) | Very Hard | Only if targeting JEE Advanced Top 5000 |
Recommended combo for JEE Main: NCERT + H.C. Verma + D.C. Pandey (selected chapters). Skip Irodov unless targeting Advanced.
Chemistry — Best Books
Physical Chemistry
| Book | Author | Purpose | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|
| NCERT Chemistry (11+12) | NCERT | Theory foundation | Basic–Moderate |
| Problems in Physical Chemistry | N. Avasthi | Numerical practice | Moderate–Hard |
| Physical Chemistry | P. Bahadur | Advanced numericals | Hard (for Advanced) |
Organic Chemistry
| Book | Author | Purpose | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|
| NCERT Chemistry | NCERT | Named reactions, mechanisms basics | Basic |
| Organic Chemistry Problems | M.S. Chouhan | Reaction practice + mechanisms | Moderate–Hard |
| Organic Chemistry | Morrison & Boyd | Reference for deep understanding | Advanced (reference only) |
Inorganic Chemistry
| Book | Author | Purpose | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|
| NCERT Chemistry (every line) | NCERT | Primary source — 90% of JEE Inorganic comes from NCERT | Basic–Moderate |
| Inorganic Chemistry Problems | V.K. Jaiswal | Extra practice and tricky questions | Moderate |
Recommended combo: NCERT (read every line, especially Inorganic) + N. Avasthi (Physical) + M.S. Chouhan (Organic).

Recommended combo: NCERT → R.D. Sharma (build base) → Cengage OR Arihant (JEE practice). Pick Cengage or Arihant, not both.
Essential Resources Beyond Books
| Resource | Why It Matters | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Previous Year Papers (last 10 years) | Most important resource after books. Reveals patterns, question types, difficulty. | Free online / ₹200–500 book |
| Mock Test Series | Simulates real exam conditions. Track percentile and weak areas. | ₹3,000–₹8,000/year |
| NCERT Exemplar | Slightly harder than NCERT exercises. Free download from ncert.nic.in. | Free |
| Formula Sheets (self-made) | Create one-page formula sheets per chapter. Revise daily in last 2 months. | Free (make your own) |
Common Book-Buying Mistakes
- Buying too many books: 3 books per subject is the maximum. More books = more confusion and less completion.
- Starting with hard books: Jumping to Irodov or P. Bahadur before mastering NCERT and H.C. Verma destroys confidence.
- Buying coaching material AND reference books: They overlap 80%. Pick one source and finish it completely.
- Ignoring NCERT: The biggest mistake. JEE Main Chemistry is 60%+ directly from NCERT.
- Not solving PYQs: Previous year papers are more valuable than any reference book. Solve them chapter-wise from day one.
The Minimum Book List (Budget-Friendly)
If budget is a constraint, this minimal list covers JEE Main preparation:
- Physics: NCERT + H.C. Verma (both volumes) — ₹600
- Chemistry: NCERT + N. Avasthi + M.S. Chouhan — ₹800
- Maths: NCERT + Cengage series — ₹1,500
- PYQs: Free online or ₹300 compiled book
- Total: ₹3,000–₹3,500 — everything you need for JEE Main
Book recommendations are based on topper interviews, coaching institute recommendations, and common usage patterns. Prices are approximate for 2025–2026. Always check the latest edition. Last updated: February 2026.

Is NCERT enough for JEE Main?
NCERT covers ~60% of JEE Main Chemistry (especially Inorganic and some Physical Chemistry) and is the foundation for Physics concepts. For Maths, NCERT alone is not sufficient — you need additional problem practice. The winning formula: NCERT as base + 1 theory book + 1 problem book per subject.
How many books should I study for JEE Main?
Maximum 2–3 books per subject (NCERT + 1 theory + 1 problem book). Studying from too many books is a common mistake — you end up with shallow coverage of many sources instead of deep mastery of a few. Complete one book fully before starting another.
Which is better for JEE Physics — H.C. Verma or D.C. Pandey?
H.C. Verma is better for building conceptual understanding (theory + moderate problems). D.C. Pandey is better for extensive problem practice (more problems, more variety). Ideal approach: Read H.C. Verma for concepts, then solve D.C. Pandey for practice. If you can only pick one, choose H.C. Verma.
Which Chemistry book is best for JEE Main?
For Physical Chemistry: N. Avasthi (problems) + NCERT (theory). For Organic Chemistry: M.S. Chouhan (problems) + Morrison & Boyd (reference, not cover-to-cover). For Inorganic Chemistry: NCERT is 90% sufficient — read it line by line. Supplement with V.K. Jaiswal for extra practice.
Is R.D. Sharma good for JEE Main Maths?
R.D. Sharma (Class 11 + 12) is excellent as a foundation — it covers all NCERT topics with extra practice. But for JEE-level problems, you need Cengage/Arihant series which have JEE-specific question types. Use R.D. Sharma to build the base, then move to JEE-focused books.
Should I buy coaching material or regular books?
If you attend coaching, their study material is usually sufficient — do not buy additional books that overlap. If you are self-studying, the books listed in this article are equivalent to or better than most coaching materials. Never buy both coaching material AND 5 reference books — you will not finish any of them.
When should I start solving previous year papers?
Start solving topic-wise PYQs after completing each chapter (from month 1 itself). Start solving full papers under timed conditions from 4–5 months before JEE. Solve at least 15–20 full previous year papers before the exam. PYQs are the single most important resource after NCERT.
Are online resources enough without physical books?
For theory understanding, yes — free YouTube lectures and NCERT PDFs cover concepts well. But for problem practice, physical books are better because: (1) you need to solve hundreds of problems by hand, (2) books have systematically graded difficulty, (3) screen fatigue makes long study sessions harder. Best approach: online lectures for concepts + physical books for practice.
