The 6-Hour Exam Strategy

JEE Advanced is a marathon — 2 papers, 3 hours each, on the same day. Managing energy is as important as managing knowledge.

Paper 1 (Morning — 9 AM to 12 PM)

  1. First 15 min: Scan all sections. Identify easy questions. Do not start solving immediately.
  2. Next 45 min: Solve Chemistry — typically the quickest subject. Secure maximum marks here.
  3. Next 60 min: Solve Physics — attempt conceptually clear questions first. Skip lengthy derivations.
  4. Next 50 min: Solve Maths — start with known question types. Skip unfamiliar patterns.
  5. Last 10 min: Review. Check for silly errors. Ensure OMR is complete.

Lunch Break (Critical)

  • Eat a moderate lunch — not too heavy (causes drowsiness), not too light (causes low energy).
  • Do NOT discuss Paper 1 with anyone. This creates anxiety and wastes mental energy.
  • Glance at formula sheet for 10 minutes, then sit quietly.
  • Drink water. Use the washroom. Relax your eyes.

Paper 2 (Afternoon — 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM)

Follow the same strategy as Paper 1. Approach it as a completely separate exam. Your performance in Paper 1 is irrelevant now.

Common Mistakes JEE Advanced Aspirants Make

  1. Preparing only for JEE Main level. JEE Main preparation covers 60% of what JEE Advanced needs. The remaining 40% — multi-concept problems, advanced problem-solving — requires specific preparation.
  2. Not solving previous year papers. Past 20 years of JEE Advanced papers are the single best resource. Many question patterns repeat with variations.
  3. Ignoring multiple correct answer questions. These carry partial marks. Even getting 2 out of 4 correct options earns you marks. Never leave these blank.
  4. Poor energy management. Students who peak in Paper 1 and crash in Paper 2 lose 50+ marks. Practise the full 6-hour format at least 5 times before the exam.
  5. Not reading question types carefully. Each section has different marking schemes. Misidentifying a "multiple correct" as "single correct" costs marks.

If you are already preparing for JEE Main, you need 3–4 months of additional focused Advanced preparation. This means: solving Advanced-level problems (Irodov, Pathfinder), practising multi-concept questions, and taking 15+ JEE Advanced mock tests. Most students prepare for both simultaneously — JEE Main builds the foundation, JEE Advanced adds depth.

All three subjects carry equal marks (120 each, total 360). However, Chemistry is typically the easiest to score high in (especially Inorganic — NCERT-based). Physics differentiates toppers — it has the most challenging questions requiring deep conceptual understanding. Maths is the most time-consuming. Strategy: secure Chemistry marks, compete in Physics, manage time in Maths.
