How to Choose the Right College

  1. Branch over college (mostly). CS at NIT Trichy is better than Civil at IIT Guwahati for career outcomes. Exception: if you want to switch branches later or go for higher studies, IIT brand matters.
  2. Check placement data, not promises. Ask for median package (not average — averages are inflated by a few high packages). Ask for the percentage of students placed (not just those who sat for placements).
  3. Location matters. Colleges in Bangalore, Delhi NCR, Hyderabad, and Pune have better internship and industry exposure than remote locations.
  4. Fees vs ROI. IITs and NITs have the best ROI — low fees (₹1.5–2.2 lakh/year) with high packages. Private colleges charging ₹15–20 lakh total need to offer ₹10+ LPA average packages to justify the investment.
  5. Alumni network. Older institutions (IITs, NITs, BITS) have stronger alumni networks that help with jobs, startups, and mentorship.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is the number 1 engineering college in India?

IIT Bombay consistently ranks #1 in engineering across NIRF, QS, and placement data. IIT Delhi and IIT Madras are close #2 and #3. Among private colleges, BITS Pilani ranks highest. The ranking depends on which metric you prioritise — IIT Bombay leads in placements and research, IIT Madras leads in innovation, and IIT Delhi leads in industry connections.

For top 5 IITs (through JEE Advanced): AIR under 1,000 for CS, under 5,000 for other branches. For top NITs (through JEE Main): 98+ percentile for CS, 95+ for other branches. For BITS Pilani: 290+ out of 390 in BITSAT. For VIT/SRM: 90+ percentile in their respective exams. For state government colleges: 85+ percentile in JEE Main or state exam.

It depends on the college. BITS Pilani, VIT Vellore, Manipal, IIIT Hyderabad, and Thapar are worth the fees — their placement records justify the investment. Average packages at top private colleges range from ₹8–15 LPA. However, many lower-ranked private colleges charge ₹10–15 lakh total fees but have poor placements (₹3–4 LPA average). Always check placement data before choosing.

It varies dramatically by college tier: IITs — ₹15–25 LPA average (top packages ₹1 Cr+). Top NITs — ₹10–18 LPA average. BITS/top private — ₹8–15 LPA average. Mid-tier colleges — ₹4–8 LPA average. Lower-tier colleges — ₹2.5–4 LPA average. Branch matters too — CS/IT commands 30–50% higher packages than Mechanical/Civil at the same college.

IITs are generally better in terms of placements, research, and brand value. However, a top NIT (Trichy, Warangal, Surathkal) is better than a newer IIT (Palakkad, Tirupati, Jammu). The deciding factor should be: branch + college combination. CS at NIT Trichy is often better than Mechanical at a newer IIT. Always prioritise branch over college name for career outcomes.

There is no direct entry to IITs without JEE Advanced for B.Tech. However, you can join IITs through: (1) JAM for M.Sc, (2) GATE for M.Tech, (3) CAT for MBA at IIT (some IITs have MBA programs), (4) Direct PhD admissions. For B.Tech specifically, JEE Advanced is the only route. No management quota, no donation seats — merit only.
