1

Functions and Their Properties

  • A function is a relationship between input (independent variable) and output (dependent variable) where each input has exactly one output
  • Functions can be represented by equations, graphs, or tables
  • Domain is the set of all possible input values; Range is the set of all possible output values
2

Types of Functions

  • Polynomial functions: f(x) = a₀xⁿ + a₁xⁿ⁻¹ + ... + aₙ where n is a non-negative integer
  • Rational functions: quotient of two polynomials f(x) = P(x)/Q(x) where Q(x) ≠ 0
  • Exponential functions: f(x) = aˣ where a > 0 and a ≠ 1
3

Limits of Functions

  • Limit describes the behavior of a function as the input approaches a particular value
  • lim(x→a) f(x) = L means f(x) approaches L as x approaches a
  • Left-hand limit: lim(x→a⁻) f(x), Right-hand limit: lim(x→a⁺) f(x)
4

Continuity of Functions

  • A function is continuous at x = a if lim(x→a) f(x) = f(a)
  • Three conditions for continuity: function is defined at a, limit exists at a, limit equals function value
  • Types of discontinuities: removable, jump, and infinite discontinuities
