Topics in Sequences and Series
Basic Concepts - Sequences and Series
- A sequence is an ordered arrangement of numbers following a specific rule
- A finite sequence has countable terms, infinite sequence has uncountable terms
- Terms are denoted as a₁, a₂, a₃, ..., aₙ where aₙ is the general term
Arithmetic Progression (AP)
- Each term (except first) is obtained by adding a constant to the previous term
- Common difference d = aₙ₊₁ - aₙ (constant for all n)
- Can have positive, negative, or zero common difference
Arithmetic Mean (AM)
- AM of two numbers a and b is (a+b)/2
- Single AM between a and b makes a, AM, b an AP
- Can insert multiple AMs between two numbers
Geometric Progression (GP)
- Each term (except first) is obtained by multiplying previous term by a constant
- Common ratio r = aₙ₊₁/aₙ (constant for all n, r ≠ 0)
- Three numbers a, b, c are in GP if b² = ac
