  • Tectonic earthquakes most devastating with large area of influence
  • Indian plate moving 1 cm/year northward, obstructed by Eurasian plate

Tsunami

  • Seismic sea waves caused by sudden sea-floor movement during earthquakes/volcanic eruptions
  • Also called harbour waves, generated by vertical displacement of ocean water
  • Speed depends on water depth - faster in shallow water than deep ocean
