Understanding Disasters and Natural Hazards
- Change is the law of nature - can be gradual (landform evolution) or sudden (earthquakes, tsunamis)
- From human perspective, changes are value-loaded (good or bad), while from nature's perspective they are value-neutral
- Disaster definition: Undesirable occurrence from forces largely outside human control, strikes quickly with little warning, causes serious disruption
Classification of Natural Disasters
- Four main categories: Atmospheric, Terrestrial, Aquatic, and Biological
- Atmospheric: Blizzards, thunderstorms, lightning, tornadoes, tropical cyclones, drought, hailstorms, heat waves
- Terrestrial: Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, avalanches, subsidence, soil erosion
Earthquakes in India
- Most unpredictable and destructive natural disasters
- Tectonic earthquakes most devastating with large area of influence
- Indian plate moving 1 cm/year northward, obstructed by Eurasian plate
Tsunami
- Seismic sea waves caused by sudden sea-floor movement during earthquakes/volcanic eruptions
- Also called harbour waves, generated by vertical displacement of ocean water
- Speed depends on water depth - faster in shallow water than deep ocean
