Key Topics to Revise

1

Types of Motion for Rigid Bodies

  • Pure translational motion: All particles have same velocity at any instant (e.g., block sliding down incline)
  • Pure rotational motion: Body rotates about fixed axis, each particle moves in circular path (e.g., ceiling fan)
  • Combined motion: Translation + Rotation (e.g., rolling cylinder)
2

Center of Mass

  • Center of mass is the weighted average position of all particles
  • For two particles: X = (m₁x₁ + m₂x₂)/(m₁ + m₂)
  • For n particles: X = Σmᵢxᵢ/M, Y = Σmᵢyᵢ/M, Z = Σmᵢzᵢ/M
3

Motion of Center of Mass

  • CM moves as if all mass concentrated at CM and all external forces act there
  • Internal forces don't affect CM motion (Newton's 3rd law)
  • Velocity of CM: V = P/M where P is total momentum
4

Linear Momentum of System

  • Total momentum P = Σpᵢ = Σmᵢvᵢ
  • P = MV (momentum equals total mass times CM velocity)
  • Conservation of momentum: If F_ext = 0, then P = constant
