Key Topics to Revise
Types of Motion for Rigid Bodies
- Pure translational motion: All particles have same velocity at any instant (e.g., block sliding down incline)
- Pure rotational motion: Body rotates about fixed axis, each particle moves in circular path (e.g., ceiling fan)
- Combined motion: Translation + Rotation (e.g., rolling cylinder)
Center of Mass
- Center of mass is the weighted average position of all particles
- For two particles: X = (m₁x₁ + m₂x₂)/(m₁ + m₂)
- For n particles: X = Σmᵢxᵢ/M, Y = Σmᵢyᵢ/M, Z = Σmᵢzᵢ/M
Motion of Center of Mass
- CM moves as if all mass concentrated at CM and all external forces act there
- Internal forces don't affect CM motion (Newton's 3rd law)
- Velocity of CM: V = P/M where P is total momentum
Linear Momentum of System
- Total momentum P = Σpᵢ = Σmᵢvᵢ
- P = MV (momentum equals total mass times CM velocity)
- Conservation of momentum: If F_ext = 0, then P = constant
