Kinetic Theory
CBSE · Class 11 · Physics
Complete topic list for Kinetic Theory in CBSE Class 11 Physics. Key concepts, sub-topics, and what to focus on for board exams.
Topics in Kinetic Theory
Molecular Nature of Matter
- All matter is made up of atoms - tiny particles in perpetual motion
- Atomic hypothesis: atoms attract when slightly apart, repel when squeezed together
- Ancient Indian philosopher Kanada (6th century BC) proposed atomic theory with four types of atoms: Bhoomi (Earth), Ap (water), Tejas (fire), and Vayu (air)
Behavior of Gases and Gas Laws
- Gases are easier to understand than solids/liquids due to negligible intermolecular forces
- Ideal gas approximation works best at low pressures and high temperatures
- Real gases deviate from ideal behavior at high pressures and low temperatures
Kinetic Theory of Ideal Gas
- Gas molecules are in constant random motion
- All collisions are perfectly elastic (kinetic energy conserved)
- Intermolecular forces are negligible except during collisions
Law of Equipartition of Energy
- Energy is equally distributed among all degrees of freedom
- Each degree of freedom contributes ½kBT to average energy
- Translational degrees of freedom: 3 (x, y, z directions)
