Rate of Chemical Reaction
- Rate of reaction is the change in concentration of reactants or products per unit time
- Rate = -Δ[R]/Δt for reactants (negative sign because concentration decreases)
- Rate = +Δ[P]/Δt for products (positive sign because concentration increases)
Factors Affecting Rate of Reaction
- Concentration of reactants: Higher concentration generally increases rate
- Temperature: Rate approximately doubles for every 10°C rise
- Catalyst: Provides alternate pathway with lower activation energy
Rate Law and Rate Constant
- Rate law: Rate = k[A]ˣ[B]ʸ where x,y are experimental orders
- Rate law must be determined experimentally, not from balanced equation
- Rate constant k is specific for each reaction at given temperature
Order and Molecularity
- Order: Sum of exponents in rate law (can be 0, fraction, or integer)
- Molecularity: Number of molecules participating in elementary reaction
- Order is experimental, molecularity is theoretical
