What is a box diagram and how do we use it to solve addition problems?
Answer
A box diagram is a drawing that shows the parts of a word problem. For addition, we draw boxes for the numbers we know and one empty box for the answer. Example: 364 saplings + 52 saplings = ? sapling
Kishan had 364 saplings. He got 52 more saplings. How many saplings does he have now?
Answer
364 + 52 = 416 saplings. We can solve this by adding: 364 + 52. First add ones: 4 + 2 = 6. Then add tens: 6 + 5 = 11 (write 1, carry 1). Then add hundreds: 3 + 0 + 1(carried) = 4. Answer: 416 saplings
How do we use a number line to add 364 + 52?
Answer
Start at 364 on the number line. Jump forward 50 (to reach 414), then jump forward 2 more (to reach 416). So 364 + 52 = 416. We can break 52 into 50 + 2 to make jumping easier.
What does HTO stand for and how do we use HTO blocks?
Answer
HTO stands for Hundreds, Tens, and Ones. HTO blocks help us understand place value. Big squares = hundreds, long strips = tens, small cubes = ones. We use them to add and subtract by grouping and regr
Kishan needs 230 saplings but has packed only 75. How many more does he need?
Answer
230 - 75 = 155 saplings. To subtract: We can't take 5 from 0, so we borrow 1 ten (making 10 ones). 10 - 5 = 5 ones. We can't take 7 from 2 tens (now 1 ten), so we borrow 1 hundred. 11 - 7 = 4 tens. 1
When subtracting, what do we do when we can't take a bigger number from a smaller number?
Answer
We borrow from the next place value. For example, if we can't take 7 from 3, we borrow 1 from the tens place. The tens place decreases by 1, and we get 13 in the ones place. Then 13 - 7 = 6.
What is the difference between 456 and 63?
Answer
456 - 63 = 393. Working step by step: 6 - 3 = 3 (ones), 5 - 6 needs borrowing, so 15 - 6 = 9 (tens), 3 - 0 = 3 (hundreds, but we borrowed 1, so 4 - 1 = 3). Answer: 393.
What is 309 + 80?
Answer
309 + 80 = 389. Since we're adding 80 (8 tens), we add 8 to the tens place: 0 + 8 = 8. The hundreds and ones places stay the same. So 309 + 80 = 389.
