What is a pattern?
Answer
A pattern is a regular arrangement or sequence that repeats in a predictable way. Examples include arrangements of objects, numbers, or shapes that follow a rule.
If Gundappa has 4 rows of coconut trees with 5 trees in each row, how many coconut trees does he have in total?
Answer
4 × 5 = 20 coconut trees. We can count by grouping: 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 20 trees total.
What is grouping and why is it useful for counting?
Answer
Grouping means organizing objects into equal sets to make counting easier and faster. Instead of counting one by one, we can count by groups like 5s or 10s.
If each tray has 6 coconut laddoos and there are 3 trays, how many laddoos are there in total?
Answer
3 × 6 = 18 coconut laddoos. We can think of it as 6 + 6 + 6 = 18 laddoos.
What are even numbers?
Answer
Even numbers are numbers that can be divided into pairs without any leftover. They end in 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8. Examples: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12.
What are odd numbers?
Answer
Odd numbers are numbers that cannot be divided into pairs - there's always one left over. They end in 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9. Examples: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11.
How can you tell if a number is even without pairing objects?
Answer
Look at the last digit (ones place). If it's 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8, the number is even. If it's 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9, the number is odd.
Is 15 an even or odd number? Explain.
Answer
15 is an odd number because it ends in 5. When we try to pair 15 objects, we get 7 pairs with 1 object left over.
