Understanding Parts and Wholes
- When we divide an object into equal parts, each part is called a fraction
- A fraction represents a part of a whole object or group
- The whole object can be any shape - circle, rectangle, square, triangle
Halves and Quarters
- Half means dividing into 2 equal parts, written as 1/2
- Quarter means dividing into 4 equal parts, written as 1/4
- There are many different ways to divide shapes into halves and quarters
Comparing Fractions
- When the whole is divided into more parts, each part becomes smaller
- 1/2 is greater than 1/3, 1/4, 1/5, etc.
- When denominators are the same, compare numerators
Fractions in Daily Life
- Fractions are used when sharing food, dividing objects, measuring
- We can find fractions of groups of objects, not just single objects
