What is the relationship between multiplication and division? Give an example with 5 × 7 = 35.
Answer
Multiplication and division are inverse operations. If 5 × 7 = 35, then we can write two division facts: 35 ÷ 5 = 7 and 35 ÷ 7 = 5. Every multiplication fact gives us two related division facts.
What is the formula that shows the relationship between dividend, divisor, quotient, and remainder?
Answer
N = D × Q + R, where N is the dividend (number being divided), D is the divisor, Q is the quotient (answer), and R is the remainder (what's left over).
Solve: 30 × 30 = ? Write two division statements from this.
Answer
30 × 30 = 900. The two division statements are: 900 ÷ 30 = 30 and 900 ÷ 30 = 30. (Since both factors are the same, both division facts are identical.)
What pattern do you notice in these divisions: 40 ÷ 10 = 4, 400 ÷ 10 = 40, 4000 ÷ 10 = 400?
Answer
When dividing by 10, the digits shift one place to the right (or we remove one zero from the right). Dividing by 10 makes numbers 10 times smaller. Each answer has one less zero than the dividend.
Sabina cycles 160 km in 20 days, covering the same distance each day. How many kilometres does she cycle each day?
Answer
Distance per day = Total distance ÷ Number of days = 160 ÷ 20 = 8 km. Sabina cycles 8 km each day.
How many ₹100 notes does Seema need to buy coconuts worth ₹4200?
Answer
Number of ₹100 notes = Total amount ÷ Value of each note = 4200 ÷ 100 = 42 notes. Seema needs 42 notes of ₹100.
Explain the mental strategy for dividing 1992 ÷ 4 using the method shown: 1992 = 2000 - 8.
Answer
Break 1992 as 2000 - 8. Then: 2000 ÷ 4 = 500 and 8 ÷ 4 = 2. So, 1992 ÷ 4 = 500 - 2 = 498. This strategy works by breaking the dividend into easier parts.
How can you divide 128 ÷ 4 using the halving method?
Answer
To divide by 4, halve twice: Half of 128 = 64, Half of 64 = 32. So 128 ÷ 4 = 32. This works because dividing by 4 is the same as halving twice (4 = 2 × 2).
