Key Topics to Revise

1

Understanding Fractions

  • A fraction has two parts: numerator (top number) and denominator (bottom number)
  • The denominator tells us how many equal parts the whole is divided into
  • The numerator tells us how many of those parts we are considering
2

Equivalent Fractions

  • Equivalent fractions represent the same part of a whole but are written differently
  • To make equivalent fractions, multiply or divide both numerator and denominator by the same number
  • 1/3 = 2/6 = 3/9 = 4/12 (all represent the same portion)
3

Comparing Fractions

  • When denominators are same: compare numerators (larger numerator = larger fraction)
  • When numerators are same: compare denominators (larger denominator = smaller fraction)
  • Use equivalent fractions to compare fractions with different numerators and denominators
4

Fractions on Number Line

  • Fractions can be represented as points on a number line
  • Distance between 0 and 1 is divided into equal parts based on denominator
  • Each part represents one unit fraction (like 1/4, 1/5, etc.)
