Understanding Fractions
- A fraction has two parts: numerator (top number) and denominator (bottom number)
- The denominator tells us how many equal parts the whole is divided into
- The numerator tells us how many of those parts we are considering
Equivalent Fractions
- Equivalent fractions represent the same part of a whole but are written differently
- To make equivalent fractions, multiply or divide both numerator and denominator by the same number
- 1/3 = 2/6 = 3/9 = 4/12 (all represent the same portion)
Comparing Fractions
- When denominators are same: compare numerators (larger numerator = larger fraction)
- When numerators are same: compare denominators (larger denominator = smaller fraction)
- Use equivalent fractions to compare fractions with different numerators and denominators
Fractions on Number Line
- Fractions can be represented as points on a number line
- Distance between 0 and 1 is divided into equal parts based on denominator
- Each part represents one unit fraction (like 1/4, 1/5, etc.)
