Topics in Symmetrical Designs
Reflection Symmetry and Lines of Symmetry
- Reflection symmetry means a shape looks exactly the same when folded along a line
- The fold line is called the line of symmetry or axis of symmetry
- Some shapes have vertical lines of symmetry (up-down fold)
Rotational Symmetry
- Rotational symmetry means a shape looks the same when turned around a center point
- We measure turns in fractions: 1/4 turn (90°), 1/2 turn (180°), 3/4 turn (270°), full turn (360°)
- A firki (windmill) has rotational symmetry as it looks the same after 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4 turns
Symmetry in Numbers and Alphabets
- Digits with reflection symmetry: 0, 1, 3, 8 (vertical); 0, 8 (horizontal)
- Digits with rotational symmetry: 0, 1, 6, 8, 9
- Digits with both symmetries: 0, 1, 8
Creating Symmetrical Designs
- Paper cutting technique: fold paper, draw half/quarter design, cut, and unfold
- Designs can have only reflection symmetry, only rotational symmetry, or both
- Block printing uses symmetrical patterns repeated multiple times
