Topics in Symmetry

1

Line of Symmetry (Reflection Symmetry)

  • A line of symmetry divides a figure into two identical halves that exactly overlap when folded along that line
  • The two halves are called mirror halves - they are exact reflections of each other
  • A figure can have one, multiple, or no lines of symmetry
2

Figures with Multiple Lines of Symmetry

  • Square has 4 lines of symmetry: 2 through opposite sides' midpoints, 2 through opposite corners
  • Rectangle (not square) has 2 lines of symmetry: through opposite sides' midpoints only
  • Equilateral triangle has 3 lines of symmetry
3

Creating Symmetrical Shapes

  • Ink blot method: Fold paper, drop ink on one half, press together
  • Paper folding and cutting: Fold paper, cut shapes, unfold to get symmetrical patterns
  • Punching holes: Fold paper, punch holes, unfold to create symmetrical hole patterns
4

Rotational Symmetry

  • A figure has rotational symmetry if it looks exactly the same after being rotated by a certain angle about a fixed point
  • The fixed point is called the center of rotation
  • Angles of symmetry are the angles through which the figure can be rotated to look identical
