Key Topics to Revise
Simple Expressions and Their Values
- An arithmetic expression is a mathematical phrase using numbers and operations like 13+2, 20-4, 12×5, 18÷3
- Every arithmetic expression has a value - the number it evaluates to (e.g., 13+2 = 15)
- We use the equality sign '=' to show the relationship between an expression and its value
Terms in Expressions
- Terms are parts of an expression separated by '+' signs
- In 12+7, the terms are 12 and 7
- Subtraction is converted to addition: 83-14 becomes 83+(-14)
Properties of Addition - Commutative and Associative
- Commutative Property: Swapping terms doesn't change the sum (a+b = b+a)
- Associative Property: Grouping terms differently doesn't change the sum ((a+b)+c = a+(b+c))
- These properties work with negative numbers too
Order of Operations and Brackets
- Brackets clarify the order of operations in expressions
- Always evaluate expressions inside brackets first
- Without brackets, evaluate terms first (handle ×, ÷ within each term)
