Key Topics to Revise

1

4.1 The Notion of Letter-Numbers

  • Letter-numbers (variables) are symbols used to represent unknown or variable quantities
  • Common letters used: a, b, c, x, y, z, etc.
  • Algebraic expressions contain letter-numbers and numbers combined using mathematical operations
2

4.2 Revisiting Arithmetic Expressions

  • Order of operations (BODMAS/PEMDAS) applies to algebraic expressions too
  • Brackets first, then multiplication/division, then addition/subtraction
  • Terms can be rearranged using commutative and associative properties
3

4.3 Omission of Multiplication Symbol

  • In algebra, multiplication sign (×) is often omitted for brevity
  • 4 × n is written as 4n
  • Number is written first, then the letter: 4n, not n4
4

4.4 Simplification of Algebraic Expressions

  • Like terms have the same variable part and can be combined
  • Combine coefficients of like terms: 3a + 5a = 8a
  • Unlike terms cannot be combined: 2a + 3b stays as 2a + 3b
