Numbers Tell Us Things

  • Numbers can represent different types of information beyond just quantity - they can show relationships, positions, and patterns
  • In the height arrangement activity, each child calls out the number of children in front of them who are taller

Picking Parity (Even and Odd Numbers)

  • Even numbers can be arranged in pairs without any leftovers (2, 4, 6, 8, ...)
  • Odd numbers cannot be arranged in pairs - there's always one left over (1, 3, 5, 7, ...)
  • Sum of any number of even numbers is always even

Magic Squares and Grid Explorations

  • In a 3×3 grid with numbers 1-9, sum of all row sums = sum of all column sums = 45
  • Magic square: each row, column, and diagonal has the same sum
  • For 3×3 magic square using 1-9, magic sum must be 15

  • Sequence: 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, ...
  • Each number is the sum of the two preceding numbers
