Topics in Arithmetic Expressions

1

Simple Expressions and Their Values

  • An arithmetic expression is a mathematical phrase using numbers and operations like 13+2, 20-4, 12×5, 18÷3
  • Every arithmetic expression has a value - the number it evaluates to (e.g., 13+2 = 15)
  • We use the equality sign '=' to show the relationship between an expression and its value
2

Terms in Expressions

  • Terms are parts of an expression separated by '+' signs
  • In 12+7, the terms are 12 and 7
  • Subtraction is converted to addition: 83-14 becomes 83+(-14)
3

Properties of Addition - Commutative and Associative

  • Commutative Property: Swapping terms doesn't change the sum (a+b = b+a)
  • Associative Property: Grouping terms differently doesn't change the sum ((a+b)+c = a+(b+c))
  • These properties work with negative numbers too
4

Order of Operations and Brackets

  • Brackets clarify the order of operations in expressions
  • Always evaluate expressions inside brackets first
  • Without brackets, evaluate terms first (handle ×, ÷ within each term)
