Sources of Light

  • The Sun is the main source of natural light on Earth
  • Natural sources: Sun, stars, lightning, fire, fireflies, and other luminous animals

Light Travels in Straight Lines

  • Light travels in straight lines - this is called rectilinear propagation of light
  • We can see objects only when light from them reaches our eyes in straight lines
  • Three holes in matchboxes must be aligned to see light pass through

  • Transparent materials allow light to pass almost completely (clear glass, water)
  • Translucent materials allow light to pass partially (frosted glass, tracing paper)

  • Three things needed for shadow: light source, opaque object, and screen
  • Shadow size depends on the distance between object, light source, and screen
