Experiencing Exponential Growth
- Paper folding experiment demonstrates exponential growth - thickness doubles with each fold
- After 10 folds: thickness ≈ 1 cm, after 17 folds: ≈ 131 cm (4+ feet)
- After 26 folds: ≈ 670 m (height of Burj Khalifa is 830 m)
Exponential Notation and Basic Operations
- n^a means n multiplied by itself 'a' times
- Base: the number being multiplied, Exponent/Power: how many times to multiply
- n² = n squared, n³ = n cubed, n⁴ = n to the power 4
Zero and Negative Exponents
- Any non-zero number raised to power 0 equals 1: n⁰ = 1
- Division rule: n^a ÷ n^b = n^(a-b) when a > b
- Negative exponents: n^(-a) = 1/n^a and 1/n^(-a) = n^a
Powers of 10 and Scientific Notation
- Powers of 10: 10¹ = 10, 10² = 100, 10³ = 1000, etc.
- Scientific notation format: a × 10^n where 1 ≤ a < 10, n is integer
- Large numbers: positive exponent (5900 = 5.9 × 10³)
