Sum of Consecutive Numbers and Parity

  • Every natural number can be written as a sum of consecutive numbers in at least one way
  • When 4 consecutive numbers are combined with + and - signs in any way, all 8 expressions have the same parity (all even or all odd)
  • Parity rules: odd ± odd = even, even ± even = even, odd ± even = odd

Even Numbers and Multiples of 4

  • Even numbers are either multiples of 4 (remainder 0) or leave remainder 2 when divided by 4
  • Sum of two multiples of 4 is always a multiple of 4
  • Sum of two even numbers (not multiples of 4) is always a multiple of 4

  • If a divides M and N separately, then a divides M+N and M-N
  • If A is divisible by k, then all multiples of A are divisible by k
  • If A is divisible by k, then A is divisible by all factors of k
