8.1 Balanced and Unbalanced Forces
- Force is a push, pull, or hit that can change the state of motion of an object
- We cannot see force directly, but we can observe its effects on objects
- Forces can change the speed, direction, shape, or size of objects
8.2 Newton's First Law of Motion (Law of Inertia)
- Based on Galileo's observations of objects on inclined planes
- An object at rest remains at rest unless acted upon by an unbalanced force
- An object in uniform motion continues in uniform motion unless acted upon by an unbalanced force
8.3 Inertia and Mass
- All objects have inertia, but not the same amount
- Mass is the quantitative measure of inertia
- Heavier objects have more inertia and are harder to accelerate
8.4 Newton's Second Law of Motion
- The acceleration of an object is directly proportional to the net force acting on it
- The acceleration is inversely proportional to the mass of the object
- Force equals mass times acceleration (F = ma)
