Revision Notes — Progression and Series
Key concepts, formulas, and definitions from Progression and Series for JEE Advanced Mathematics preparation.
Key Topics to Revise
Sequences and Series Fundamentals
- A sequence is an ordered list of numbers following a specific pattern
- A series is the sum of terms in a sequence
- A progression is a sequence where terms follow a definite mathematical pattern
Arithmetic Progression (AP)
- In AP, difference between consecutive terms is constant (common difference d)
- General form: a, a+d, a+2d, a+3d, ...
- nth term formula: an = a + (n-1)d
Geometric Progression (GP)
- In GP, ratio between consecutive terms is constant (common ratio r)
- General form: a, ar, ar², ar³, ...
- nth term formula: an = ar^(n-1)
Harmonic Progression (HP)
- In HP, reciprocals of terms form an AP
- If a₁, a₂, a₃, ... is HP, then 1/a₁, 1/a₂, 1/a₃, ... is AP
- nth term of HP: an = 1/(A + (n-1)D) where A and D are first term and common difference of corresponding AP
