Topics covered in Relations and Functions for JEE Advanced Mathematics.

Topics in Relations and Functions

1

Relations: Types and Properties

  • A relation R from set A to set B is a subset of A × B
  • Reflexive: Every element is related to itself (aRa for all a ∈ A)
  • Symmetric: If aRb then bRa for all a,b ∈ A
2

Functions: One-One, Many-One, Onto

  • Function f: A → B assigns unique image to each element in domain
  • One-one (Injective): Different inputs give different outputs
  • Many-one: At least two inputs give same output
3

Modulus Functions and Inequalities

  • |x| = x if x ≥ 0, |x| = -x if x < 0
  • |x - a| represents distance from point a on number line
  • Properties: |xy| = |x||y|, |x/y| = |x|/|y|, ||x| - |y|| ≤ |x ± y| ≤ |x| + |y|
4

Trigonometric and Inverse Trigonometric Functions

  • sin⁻¹x: domain [-1,1], range [-π/2, π/2]
  • cos⁻¹x: domain [-1,1], range [0, π]
  • tan⁻¹x: domain R, range (-π/2, π/2)
