Revision Notes — Probability 2
Key concepts, formulas, and definitions from Probability 2 for JEE Mains Mathematics preparation.
Key Topics to Revise
Conditional Probability
- Conditional probability measures the probability of event A occurring given that event B has already occurred
- Notation: P(A|B) read as 'probability of A given B'
- Formula: P(A|B) = P(A∩B)/P(B), provided P(B) ≠ 0
Multiplication Theorem of Probability
- Used to find probability of intersection of two or more events
- For two events: P(A∩B) = P(A)×P(B|A) = P(B)×P(A|B)
- For three events: P(A∩B∩C) = P(A)×P(B|A)×P(C|AB)
Independent Events
- Events A and B are independent if occurrence of one doesn't affect the probability of the other
- Mathematical condition: P(A∩B) = P(A)×P(B)
- Equivalent conditions: P(A|B) = P(A) and P(B|A) = P(B)
Total Probability Theorem
- Used when sample space can be partitioned into mutually exclusive and exhaustive events
- Partition: A₁, A₂, ..., Aₙ such that Aᵢ∩Aⱼ = φ (i≠j) and A₁∪A₂∪...∪Aₙ = S
- Formula: P(B) = Σ P(Aᵢ)×P(B|Aᵢ) for any event B
