Key concepts, formulas, and definitions from Superposition of Waves for JEE Mains Physics preparation.
Key Topics to Revise
1
Principle of Superposition
- When two or more waves meet at a point, the net displacement is the algebraic sum of individual displacements: y = y₁ + y₂
- This principle applies to all types of waves - mechanical, electromagnetic, sound waves
- The superposition is instantaneous - at every moment, displacements add algebraically
2
Resultant Amplitude and Intensity for Coherent Sources
- For coherent sources, phase difference remains constant at any given point
- Resultant amplitude depends on individual amplitudes and phase difference
- Intensity is proportional to square of amplitude (I ∝ A²)
3
Interference
- Occurs when coherent waves meet and produce regions of maximum and minimum intensity
- Constructive interference: waves add up (φ = 0, 2π, 4π... or Δx = 0, λ, 2λ...)
- Destructive interference: waves cancel out (φ = π, 3π, 5π... or Δx = λ/2, 3λ/2...)
4
Standing Waves
- Formed by superposition of two identical waves traveling in opposite directions
- Nodes: points of zero amplitude (destructive interference)
- Antinodes: points of maximum amplitude (constructive interference)
