Key Topics to Revise
Reflection of Light and Plane Mirrors
- Light reflects according to two fundamental laws: angle of incidence equals angle of reflection, and incident ray, reflected ray, and normal lie in the same plane
- Plane mirrors always form virtual, erect, laterally inverted images of the same size as the object
- Image distance equals object distance for plane mirrors (v = -u)
Spherical Mirrors - Concave and Convex
- Concave mirrors converge light rays (converging mirror), convex mirrors diverge light rays (diverging mirror)
- Focal length f = R/2, where R is radius of curvature
- Mirror formula: 1/f = 1/v + 1/u applies to both concave and convex mirrors
Refraction of Light and Snell's Law
- Refraction occurs when light travels from one medium to another due to change in speed
- Snell's Law: μ₁sin θ₁ = μ₂sin θ₂, where μ is refractive index
- Absolute refractive index μ = c/v, where c is speed of light in vacuum, v is speed in medium
Lenses and Lens Formula
- Lenses are transparent media bounded by two refracting surfaces with at least one curved surface
- Convex lenses are converging (positive focal length), concave lenses are diverging (negative focal length)
- Lens formula: 1/f = 1/v - 1/u (note the minus sign difference from mirror formula)
