Introduction and Basic Concepts
- Coordinate axes consist of two perpendicular lines - x-axis (horizontal) and y-axis (vertical)
- Any point on the plane is represented by an ordered pair (x, y) called coordinates
- x-coordinate (abscissa) is the distance from y-axis, y-coordinate (ordinate) is the distance from x-axis
Distance Formula
- Distance between two points can be found using Pythagoras theorem

Section Formula
- Section formula finds coordinates of point dividing a line segment in given ratio
- If point P divides line AB in ratio m₁:m₂, then P is closer to the point with smaller ratio number
- Internal division means point P lies between A and B
Mid-point Formula
- Mid-point is special case of section formula where ratio is 1:1
- Mid-point divides line segment into two equal parts
- Formula is simpler version of section formula
