Key Topics to Revise
Nature of Light and Basic Concepts
- Light travels in straight lines in a transparent medium
- We see objects because they reflect light that falls on them
- A ray of light represents the straight-line path of light
Reflection of Light - Laws and Applications
- Highly polished surfaces like mirrors reflect most of the light falling on them
- Two laws of reflection: (1) Angle of incidence = Angle of reflection, (2) Incident ray, reflected ray, and normal all lie in the same plane
- These laws apply to all types of reflecting surfaces including curved surfaces
Spherical Mirrors - Types and Terminology
- Concave mirror: Reflecting surface curves inwards (towards center of sphere)
- Convex mirror: Reflecting surface curves outwards (away from center of sphere)
- Pole (P): Center point of the mirror's reflecting surface
Image Formation by Spherical Mirrors
- Concave mirrors can form both real and virtual images depending on object position
- Real images are formed when object is beyond focus, virtual when between pole and focus
- Convex mirrors always form virtual, erect, and diminished images
