Mitosis - Somatic Cell Division
- Mitosis was discovered by W. Flemming
- Also called somatic cell division or equational division
- Occurs in meristem, cambium, epithelium, bone marrow cells
Cytokinesis in Plants vs Animals
- Animal cells: Cleavage furrow forms at equatorial plane
- Animal cytokinesis: Centripetal division (inward from periphery)
- Plant cells: Cell plate formation from Golgi-derived vesicles
Meiosis - Reduction Division
- Term coined by Farmer and Moore
- Occurs in reproductive cells (anthers, ovules, testes, ovaries)
- Produces four genetically different haploid gametes
