Introduction to Glands and Hormones
- Glands are groups of secretory tissues classified into exocrine and endocrine types
- Exocrine glands have ducts and release secretions into target organs (liver, salivary glands)
- Endocrine glands are ductless and release hormones directly into blood
Comparison: Nervous vs Endocrine System
- Both systems control and coordinate body activities and provide communication
- Nervous system: Fast conduction, localized effect, short-lived response, direct pathway
- Endocrine system: Slow conduction, widespread effect, long-lasting response, bloodstream pathway
Pituitary Gland - The Master Gland
- Pea-sized whitish gland (5g) hanging from hypothalamus by infundibulum
- Three parts: anterior lobe (adenohypophysis), posterior lobe (neurohypophysis), intermediate lobe
- Anterior lobe is glandular tissue; posterior lobe is nervous tissue
Growth Hormone Disorders
- Hypo-secretion in children: Dwarfism (short stature, normal mental development)
- Hyper-secretion in children: Gigantism (excessive height 7-8 feet)
- Hyper-secretion in adults: Acromegaly (broad flat bone ends, negroid appearance)
