Topics in Ratio and Proportion

1

Basic Concepts of Ratio

  • Ratio is a comparison between two quantities of the same kind and same unit
  • Ratio of a to b is written as a:b or a/b, where b ≠ 0
  • In ratio a:b, 'a' is called antecedent and 'b' is called consequent
2

Types of Ratios and Composition

  • Compound ratio: Product of two or more ratios
  • Duplicate ratio: Square of a given ratio (a:b)² = a²:b²
  • Triplicate ratio: Cube of a given ratio (a:b)³ = a³:b³
3

Proportion - Basic Concepts

  • Four quantities a,b,c,d are in proportion if a:b = c:d
  • Written as a:b::c:d or a/b = c/d
  • a and d are extremes, b and c are means
4

Continued Proportion

  • Numbers a,b,c,d,e... are in continued proportion if a/b = b/c = c/d = d/e = ...
  • In continued proportion, each term (except first and last) is mean proportional between its adjacent terms
  • If three numbers a,b,c are in continued proportion: a:b = b:c
