Topics in Factorisation
Introduction to Factorisation
- Factorisation means expressing a polynomial as a product of two or more expressions
- Each expression in the product is called a factor of the polynomial
- Factorisation is the reverse process of multiplication
Method 1: Taking Out Common Factors
- Find the Highest Common Factor (HCF) of all terms
- Divide each term by the HCF and write the result in brackets
- Keep the HCF outside the bracket as a common factor
Method 2: Factorisation by Grouping
- Used when expressions have an even number of terms
- Group terms in pairs so each group has a common factor
- Factor out common factors from each group
Method 3: Middle Term Splitting for Trinomials
- Used for trinomials of the form ax² + bx + c
- Split the middle term (bx) into two terms whose sum equals b
- The product of coefficients of split terms should equal ac
