Quick revision notes for Measurements and Experimentation — ICSE Class 9 Physics. Key concepts, formulas, and definitions for last-minute revision.
Key Topics to Revise
Systems of Units and S.I. System
- Measurement is the process of comparing a physical quantity with a known standard quantity of the same nature
- Physical quantity = numerical value × unit
- Units must be convenient in size, well-defined, reproducible, and constant in space and time
Measurement of Length - Vernier Callipers
- Least count is the smallest measurement that can be taken accurately with an instrument
- Vernier principle uses two scales - main scale (fixed) and vernier scale (movable)
- Vernier scale has n divisions equal to (n-1) divisions of main scale
Measurement of Length - Screw Gauge
- Screw gauge works on the principle of screw - linear movement proportional to rotational movement
- Pitch is the distance moved by screw along its axis in one complete rotation
- Circular scale (head scale) is divided into equal divisions (usually 50 or 100)
Simple Pendulum and Time Measurement
- Simple pendulum consists of a point mass (bob) suspended by a massless, inextensible string
- One oscillation is one complete to-and-fro motion
- Time period (T) is time taken for one complete oscillation
