Key Topics to Revise
Basic Definitions and Concepts
- A circle is a collection of all points in a plane at a constant distance (radius) from a fixed point (centre)
- Three possible positions of a line with respect to a circle: non-intersecting, secant, and tangent
- A tangent touches the circle at exactly one point called the point of contact
Theorem 10.1: Tangent Perpendicular to Radius
- The tangent at any point of a circle is perpendicular to the radius through the point of contact
- This theorem is the foundation for most tangent-related problems
- At any point on a circle, there can be one and only one tangent
Number of Tangents from Different Positions
- From a point inside the circle: 0 tangents possible
- From a point on the circle: exactly 1 tangent possible
- From a point outside the circle: exactly 2 tangents possible
Theorem 10.2: Equal Tangent Lengths
- Tangent lengths from an external point to a circle are equal
- This creates isosceles triangles in tangent problems
- The line joining external point to centre bisects the angle between tangents
