Key Topics to Revise
Congruence of Triangles - Fundamental Concepts
- Two triangles are congruent if they have the same shape and size - all corresponding sides and angles are equal
- Congruent triangles can be placed on top of each other to cover completely
- Symbol: ∆ABC ≅ ∆PQR means triangle ABC is congruent to triangle PQR
SAS Congruence Rule - Side-Angle-Side
- Two triangles are congruent if two sides and the included angle of one triangle are equal to two sides and the included angle of another triangle
- The angle must be between the two given equal sides (included angle)
- This is an axiom - accepted as true without proof
ASA and AAS Congruence Rules - Angle-Side-Angle and Angle-Angle-Side
- ASA: Two triangles are congruent if two angles and the included side are equal
- AAS: Two triangles are congruent if two angles and a non-included side are equal
- If two angles are equal, the third angle is automatically equal (angle sum property)
SSS Congruence Rule - Side-Side-Side
- Two triangles are congruent if all three sides of one triangle are equal to all three sides of another triangle
- This rule can be proven using construction methods
- Useful when only side information is available
