Key Topics to Revise
What is Force?
- Force is a push, pull, or hit that can change the state of motion of an object
- Force cannot be seen or felt directly, but its effects can be observed
- Force can change the speed of an object (make it faster or slower)
Balanced and Unbalanced Forces
- Balanced forces: Equal forces acting in opposite directions, no change in motion
- Unbalanced forces: Unequal forces resulting in net force, causes change in motion
- When forces are balanced, object remains at rest or continues uniform motion
Newton's First Law of Motion (Law of Inertia)
- An object at rest remains at rest, and an object in motion remains in uniform motion, unless acted upon by an unbalanced force
- This law defines the concept of inertia - tendency to resist change in state of motion
- Galileo's experiment with inclined planes led to this understanding
Inertia and Mass
- Mass is the quantitative measure of inertia
- Greater mass means greater inertia (more resistance to change in motion)
- Examples: easier to push empty box than full box, train has more inertia than cart
