- Work is done when a force acts on an object and causes displacement in the direction of force
- Two conditions must be satisfied: (1) Force must be applied, (2) Object must be displaced
- Work = Force × Displacement (when force and displacement are in same direction)
Energy
- Energy is the capacity to do work
- Energy exists in various forms: kinetic, potential, heat, light, chemical, electrical
- Energy is a scalar quantity with same unit as work (joule)
Kinetic Energy
- Energy possessed by an object due to its motion
- Faster moving objects have more kinetic energy
- Kinetic energy depends on mass and velocity of object
Potential Energy
- Energy possessed by an object due to its position or configuration
- Gravitational potential energy depends on height above reference level
- Higher objects have more gravitational potential energy
