Key Topics to Revise

1

Neural System - Structure and Organization

  • The neural system consists of specialized cells called neurons that detect, receive, and transmit stimuli
  • Human neural system is divided into: Central Nervous System (CNS) - brain and spinal cord, and Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) - all nerves outside CNS
  • PNS contains afferent fibers (carry impulses to CNS) and efferent fibers (carry impulses from CNS)
2

Brain Structure and Functions

  • Brain is protected by cranial meninges: dura mater (outer), arachnoid mater (middle), pia mater (inner)
  • Forebrain includes: Cerebrum (largest part with cerebral cortex), Diencephalon (thalamus, hypothalamus, epithalamus)
  • Midbrain contains cerebral peduncles and corpora quadrigemina (superior and inferior colliculi)
3

Nerve Impulse Generation and Transmission

  • Resting potential: -70mV, maintained by Na+/K+ pump (3 Na+ out, 2 K+ in)
  • Action potential generation: Na+ channels open → depolarization → K+ channels open → repolarization
  • Impulse conduction occurs as wave of depolarization along axon membrane
4

Sense Organs - Eye and Ear

  • Eye structure: Sclera (outer), Choroid (middle), Retina (inner) with photoreceptors
  • Retina contains rods (dim light vision) and cones (bright light and color vision)
  • Fovea has highest concentration of cones; blind spot has no photoreceptors
