Quick revision notes for Gravitation — Kerala Board Class 12 Physics. Key concepts, formulas, and definitions for last-minute revision.
Key Topics to Revise
Newton's Law of Universal Gravitation
- Every body in the universe attracts every other body with a force directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of distance between them
- Gravitational force is always attractive and acts along the line joining the centers of two bodies
- The force is mutual - both bodies experience equal and opposite forces (Newton's third law)
Acceleration Due to Gravity
- Acceleration due to gravity (g) is the acceleration produced in a body due to Earth's gravitational force
- At Earth's surface: g = 9.8 ms⁻² (standard value)
- g is independent of the mass of the falling object - all objects fall with same acceleration
Gravitational Field and Potential Energy
- Gravitational field is the region around a mass where other masses experience gravitational force
- Field strength E = F/m = force per unit mass
- Gravitational potential energy is the work done to bring a mass from infinity to that point
Weight and Mass
- Weight is the gravitational force acting on a body: W = mg
- Mass is an intrinsic property and remains constant everywhere
- Weight varies with location due to variation in g
