Key Topics to Revise
Relative Motion and Reference Frame
- Motion is relative - an object may appear at rest to one observer but moving to another
- The state of motion depends on the reference frame (observer's position)
- Examples: A passenger in a moving train appears at rest to fellow passengers but moving to a person on the platform
Distance and Displacement
- Distance is the total path length covered by an object (scalar quantity)
- Displacement is the shortest distance between initial and final positions (vector quantity)
- Distance is always positive, displacement can be positive or negative
Speed and Velocity
- Average speed = Total distance/Total time (scalar)
- Average velocity = Total displacement/Total time (vector)
- Instantaneous speed = speed at a particular instant
Uniform and Non-Uniform Motion
- Uniform motion: velocity remains constant (speed and direction both constant)
- Non-uniform motion: velocity changes (speed changes or direction changes or both)
- In uniform motion: distance-time graph is a straight line
