Scientific Definition of Work
- Work in science is different from everyday usage - requires both force and displacement
- Two conditions for work: (1) Force must act on object, (2) Object must be displaced
- Work is done only when displacement occurs in direction of force
Energy and Its Types

- Energy exists in various forms and can be converted from one form to another
- When work is done on an object, energy is transferred to it
Conservation of Energy
- Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only converted from one form to another
- Total mechanical energy (KE + PE) remains constant in absence of friction
- In a pendulum: PE is maximum at extremes, KE is maximum at center
Power
- Power is the rate of doing work or rate of energy transfer
- More powerful machines do same work in less time
- Power determines how quickly energy transformations occur
