Topics in Motion

1

Relative Motion and Reference Frame

  • Motion is relative - an object may appear at rest to one observer but moving to another
  • The state of motion depends on the reference frame (observer's position)
  • Examples: A passenger in a moving train appears at rest to fellow passengers but moving to a person on the platform
2

Distance and Displacement

  • Distance is the total path length covered by an object (scalar quantity)
  • Displacement is the shortest distance between initial and final positions (vector quantity)
  • Distance is always positive, displacement can be positive or negative
3

Speed and Velocity

  • Average speed = Total distance/Total time (scalar)
  • Average velocity = Total displacement/Total time (vector)
  • Instantaneous speed = speed at a particular instant
4

Uniform and Non-Uniform Motion

  • Uniform motion: velocity remains constant (speed and direction both constant)
  • Non-uniform motion: velocity changes (speed changes or direction changes or both)
  • In uniform motion: distance-time graph is a straight line
