Basic Concepts and Types of Lenses
- A lens is a transparent medium bounded by two surfaces, usually spherical
- Convex lens (converging lens): Thicker at center, converges parallel rays to a focus point
- Concave lens (diverging lens): Thinner at center, diverges parallel rays as if coming from a focus point
Sign Convention and Image Formation
- Cartesian sign convention: Origin at optical center, measurements along principal axis
- Object always placed on left side of lens
- Distances to the right of optical center are positive, to the left are negative
Image Formation by Convex Lens
- Object at infinity: Image at F₂, point size, real and inverted
- Object beyond 2F₁: Image between F₂ and 2F₂, diminished, real and inverted
- Object at 2F₁: Image at 2F₂, same size, real and inverted
Human Eye and Vision
- Human eye structure: cornea, iris, pupil, crystalline lens, retina, optic nerve
- Cornea provides most of the refraction of incoming light
- Iris controls amount of light entering through pupil
