Key Topics to Revise
Refraction of Light - Basic Concepts
- Refraction is the bending of light when it passes from one transparent medium to another
- Light travels in straight lines in a homogeneous medium but bends at the interface of two different media
- The bending occurs because light travels at different speeds in different media
Laws of Refraction
- First Law: The incident ray, refracted ray, and normal to the surface at the point of incidence all lie in the same plane
- Second Law (Snell's Law): For a given pair of media, the ratio sin i/sin r is constant
- The constant ratio is called the refractive index of the second medium with respect to the first
Refractive Index
- Refractive index is a measure of how much light bends when entering a medium
- It depends on the velocity of light in the medium
- Higher refractive index means light travels slower in that medium
Bending of Light - Rules
- Light bends towards the normal when going from rarer to denser medium (air to glass)
- Light bends away from the normal when going from denser to rarer medium (glass to air)
- No bending occurs when light is incident normally (perpendicular to surface)
