Key Topics to Revise

1

Refraction of Light - Basic Concepts

  • Refraction is the bending of light when it passes from one transparent medium to another
  • Light travels in straight lines in a homogeneous medium but bends at the interface of two different media
  • The bending occurs because light travels at different speeds in different media
2

Laws of Refraction

  • First Law: The incident ray, refracted ray, and normal to the surface at the point of incidence all lie in the same plane
  • Second Law (Snell's Law): For a given pair of media, the ratio sin i/sin r is constant
  • The constant ratio is called the refractive index of the second medium with respect to the first
3

Refractive Index

  • Refractive index is a measure of how much light bends when entering a medium
  • It depends on the velocity of light in the medium
  • Higher refractive index means light travels slower in that medium
4

Bending of Light - Rules

  • Light bends towards the normal when going from rarer to denser medium (air to glass)
  • Light bends away from the normal when going from denser to rarer medium (glass to air)
  • No bending occurs when light is incident normally (perpendicular to surface)
