Key Topics to Revise

1

Types of Excretory Products and Classification of Animals

  • Metabolic wastes include nitrogenous wastes (ammonia, urea, uric acid), water, CO₂, mineral salts, pigments (bilirubin, urochrome), and excess substances
  • Deamination of excess amino acids produces toxic ammonia, which may be converted to less toxic urea or uric acid
  • Water availability determines the mode of nitrogenous waste excretion in animals
2

Human Excretory System - Structure and Components

  • Kidneys: Bean-shaped, retroperitoneal organs (12th thoracic to 3rd lumbar vertebra). Dimensions: 10×5×2.5 cm, Weight: 150g (male), 135g (female)
  • Hilus: Notch on concave surface where renal artery enters and renal vein + ureter exit
  • Kidney structure: Outer renal cortex (granular, contains Malpighian bodies), Inner renal medulla (striated, contains pyramids)
3

Nephron Structure and Function

  • Nephron: Functional unit of kidney, ~1 million per kidney, 4-6 cm long
  • Components: Bowman's capsule, PCT, Loop of Henle, DCT, Collecting tubule
  • Malpighian body: Bowman's capsule + Glomerulus, diameter ~200 μm
4

Urine Formation Process

  • Three steps: Ultrafiltration → Selective Reabsorption → Tubular Secretion
  • Ultrafiltration occurs at glomerulus due to pressure differences
  • Glomerular Hydrostatic Pressure (55 mmHg) opposed by Blood Osmotic Pressure (30 mmHg) and Capsular Pressure (15 mmHg)
