Geometric Progression (G.P.) - Fundamentals

  • A sequence {tn} is a G.P. if tn+1/tn = constant (common ratio r) for all n ∈ N
  • Standard form: a, ar, ar², ar³, ar⁴, ... where 'a' is first term and 'r' is common ratio
  • General term: tn = ar^(n-1) where a ≠ 0, r ≠ 0

Finding Terms and Common Ratio

  • Given any two terms, we can find 'a' and 'r' using simultaneous equations
  • For finding multiple numbers in G.P., use symmetric forms like a/r, a, ar for 3 terms
  • Use tn = ar^(n-1) and tm = ar^(m-1) to create equations

Sum of n Terms of G.P.

  • Sum formula depends on whether r = 1 or r ≠ 1
  • For r ≠ 1: Sn = a(r^n - 1)/(r - 1) or Sn = a(1 - r^n)/(1 - r)
  • For r = 1: Sn = na (all terms are equal)

Sum of Infinite G.P.

  • Sum to infinity exists only when |r| < 1
  • Formula: S∞ = a/(1-r) when |r| < 1
  • If |r| ≥ 1, sum to infinity does not exist
